Dedication
For the children who learned to survive before they had words for what they were surviving.
For the mothers who kept moving while they were still discovering themselves.
And for every person who has wondered whether where they started had already decided where they would end.
It did not. You were born with purpose.
Author’s note
This story begins before Cava had language for trauma. She knew fear, punishment, protection, laughter, family, danger, belonging, and the confusing truth that several of those things could exist in the same place.
Years later, she would understand that experiences do not remain neatly stored in the past. The body can become watchful. A raised voice can feel larger than the present moment. Rejection can awaken an older fear. Scarcity can make dependence feel safer than uncertainty. None of that removes responsibility for adult choices. It helps explain why some choices can feel urgent, familiar, or necessary before a person understands the roots beneath them.
Cava is not a diagnosis. This book does not claim that every decision she made was caused by trauma. It follows a woman learning to recognize patterns in herself: what she learned to do to survive, what she carried into adulthood, and what she eventually chose to change.
Her faith is not presented as a shortcut around pain. Christ is the root she returns to while learning that healing can include prayer, truth, boundaries, relationships, accountability, professional growth, and the courage to choose differently.
The pain in these pages did not create Cava’s purpose. The people who hurt her do not deserve credit for the woman she became. Her life belongs to God, and her choices, perseverance, love, faith, and resilience belong to her story.
For that reason, Cava's memories would not be arranged as evidence against the people she loved. They would be told as life was lived: complicated, crowded, funny, painful, faithful, and unfinished. Her mother could have a hard life and Cava could have childhood wounds. her father, Cyrus, could provide for his family and still use words or discipline that left marks inside her. Her uncles could make her feel protected even when their way of handling a bully was something adult Cava would choose differently. Danielle could be a refuge without being able to rescue Cava from every hurt. The truth did not require heroes to be perfect or wounded people to become villains. It required Cava to remember as faithfully as she could, then allow the woman she had become to look at the child she had been with more understanding than judgment.
This is an autobiographical novel inspired by lived experiences. Cava Celeste is a fictionalized representation of the author. Names, identifying details, chronology, locations, dialogue, and some circumstances have been changed, combined, or dramatized for privacy and narrative continuity. Some scenes are composites.

About this volumeRead more
Later, dressed elegantly for her ball, Cava caught sight of herself and let the memories come without allowing them to swallow the woman standing in the mirror. The girl from the high-rise was there. The teenager pulling toward the door was there. The young mother holding receipts, babies, heartbreak, and prayers was there too.
"That was a rough childhood," she said softly to herself. "That was my foundation - a foundation with cracks. But a few cracks do not destroy everything when the foundation is still solid."
She smiled at the woman in the dress. Her beginnings had not been perfect. They had been crowded with love, fear, laughter, punishment, protection, arguments, prayer, mistakes, family, and survival. Somehow, all of it had come together to build the woman she was becoming.
Cava had no interest in pretending the cracks had vanished. Some memories could still tighten her chest. Some family conversations could still make the younger version of herself feel close. Healing had not turned history into fiction. It had changed who held authority over the present.
That was the encouragement she wanted to leave behind. A person can have roots in concrete and still grow. A person can come from a home filled with love and pain at the same time. A person can make choices from survival and later learn choices from wisdom. Trauma can leave marks without receiving ownership papers to the future.
Cava's purpose was not proof that suffering was necessary. It was proof that suffering was not sovereign. The little girl who cried when she had to leave Danielle's house, the teenager who fought for independence, the young mother who struggled to understand love, and the woman preparing for the ball were not separate people. They were one life still becoming.
"That is my beginning," Cava whispered. "A solid foundation, just with a few cracks. And with it all coming together, it built me into who I am."
